It is said that this temple was established starting from the story of Ida Penande Hender's journey at the request of the King of Bangli who was in power at that time. Ida Penande Hender was asked to look for three holy springs that would be used in major royal ceremonies. After walking through the forest in the northern area, he arrived at the location of the holy Sudamala spring. Because this water is holy, the local community leaders or elders make an agreement. If Sudamala's tears can ward off pests in their rice fields, then a pelinggih will be made as a form of gratitude from the local residents. This happened, so a temple was built not far from the spring called Pura Tirta Sudamala.
