The story of this incarnation is particularly inspiring for devotees of Lord Shiva. Maharishi Durvasa is famous as the eighth incarnation of Lord Shiva, known for his special qualities and ritual devotion to anger. Durvasa was a great rishi born from the Srihari portion of Lord Vishnu. His name 'Durvasa' is due to the special quality of Lord Shiva, namely his anger, which makes him unique and ferocious.
Maharishi Durvasa's unique anger and his high powers of penance made him famous among the gods and goddesses. Once, Maharishi Durvasa met Lord Shiva and requested a boon that he be given the ability to control his anger. Lord Shiva, who is omnipotent, fulfilled his wish and blessed him to appear on Hemkund mountain in Uttarakhand in the form of his eighth incarnation.
After this incarnation, Maharishi Durvasa decided to control his anger and with the power of his penance, he created many pilgrimage sites and regions. This incarnation shows devotees of Lord Shiva that by controlling anger, they will gain strength and can succeed in self-control.

According to legend, Maharishi Atri and his wife Anasuya were childless and desperately craved offspring. Seeking a solution, they turned to Lord Brahma, who advised them to perform a solemn penance dedicated to the Trinity-Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva-on the sacred mountain of Rikshakul. With unwavering devotion, they began intense spiritual practice.
After receiving the boon, the Trinity manifested in the form of three sons. Som was born from the essence of Lord Brahma, Dattatreya from the essence of Lord Vishnu, and Maharishi Durvasa from the essence of Lord Shiva. These three sages were born to the couple Maharishi Atri and Anasuya, fulfilling the promise of the gods.
The couple raised their children lovingly, instilling religious teachings and values of respect and truth. Under their guidance, Som, Dattatreya, and Durvasa grew into embodiments of truth, spirituality, and wisdom, making their parents' lives deeply spiritual and purposeful.

Rishi Durvasa had a high status amongst the gods and goddesses and his name became famous mainly because of his anger. This reflected his special spiritual influence and power, which he received on Lord Shiva's part.
