Kurma Avatar is primarily known through his role in the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean of milk) event. Kurma Avatar is primarily known for its role in the Samudra Manthana incident (the churning of the sea of milk). However, there are not many other stories that describe the emergence of Kurma Awatara outside the context of this churning process. This incarnation of Vishnu in the form of a turtle is specifically associated with one main goal, namely stabilizing Mount Mandara in the churning of the ocean to obtain Tirta Amerta (water of life).

During the Satyayuga period, the gods and asuras (giants) lived in a state of competition and fighting for power. They lived side by side but in a state of full competition. These two groups competed with each other to gain power and dominance over the universe.

Both the gods and the giants wanted to get tirta amerta, a holy liquid that could give eternal life. However, the tirta amerta was at the bottom of the ocean of milk or what was called the Ksira sea (Ksirasagara), and to get it out, great strength was needed to churn the ocean.

The gods and asuras agreed to work together to hold a meeting at the peak of Mount Meru to find a way to obtain the holy water and they decided to use Mount Mandara (Mandaragiri) in Sangka Dwipa (Sangka Island). The mountain was uprooted by Sang Anantaboga. After getting permission from Baruna (God of the Ocean), they brought Mount Mandara to the middle of the Ksira ocean.

They decided to churn the ocean by using Mount Mandara as a churning stick, and Naga Vasuki as a rope wrapped around the mountain. When the preparations were complete, Mount Mandara was placed in the middle of the ocean and Naga Vasuki was wrapped around the mountain.

The gods pulled the tail of the dragon, while the asuras held the head of the dragon. They began to pull the dragon back and forth to churn the ocean of milk. However, problems soon emerged. The very large and heavy Mount Mandara began to sink to the bottom of the ocean, making their efforts in vain.

Seeing this situation, the gods immediately asked for help from Lord Vishnu, the ruler of the universe. Vishnu, who knew the importance of obtaining the tirta amerta to maintain the balance of the world, decided to descend to the world in the form of Kurma Awatara, an avatar in the form of a giant turtle. He took a position under Mount Mandara, supporting the mountain on his back so that it would not sink. With the great power of Kurma Awatara, the mountain was able to remain on the surface of the sea.

After they succeeded in obtaining the tirta amerta. They immediately drank the tirta amirta, the gods regained their strength and power. They were able to defeat the asuras and restore peace and balance to the world. Kurma Avatar, who had helped support Mount Mandara during the churning of the ocean, then returned to her natural state after her task was complete.

Ultimately, Kurma Awatara became the second of the ten most respected avatars of Vishnu in the Hindu tradition. Although this avatar is not as popular as some other avatars such as Rama or Krishna, his role in maintaining the balance of the world remains very important and is revered in various Hindu ceremonies and rituals. Kurma Avatar depicts the power and compassion of Lord Vishnu in maintaining the balance of the universe. With his form as a giant turtle, Vishnu shows that no form or method is too small or simple to save the world, as long as it is done with the right intention. Kurma Avatar also shows that although great power is needed to achieve a goal, cooperation and trust between different parties are very important.Ā

In some interpretations or narratives, this turtle form is also seen as a symbol of the larger concept of stability and resilience. Because the turtle is a creature that has a hard shell as protection, this is also associated with Vishnu's role as a protector of the universe who is always ready to stabilize and maintain balance in critical moments.

Kurma Avatar not only supports the mountain but also maintains the balance between the gods and asuras during the churning process. This is important because without balance, their efforts will not succeed. Just as Kurma Awatara maintains the balance between the powers of the gods and asuras, we must also ensure that these two aspects are in harmony so that life remains harmonious. Kurma Awatara symbolizes the importance of a strong and stable foundation in facing great challenges. So the story of Kurma Awatara teaches that balance is the key to success. Just as the existence of Kurma Awatara as the base of a mountain allows the churning of the ocean to take place smoothly.
