Once upon a time, on the beautiful slopes of Mount Lesung in Bali, there was a small yet bustling village called Tamblingan. This village was blessed with natural beauty, surrounded by dense forests rich in flora and fauna. The villagers led simple yet happy lives, most of them working as farmers, cultivating the fertile land around them.

What made Tamblingan truly special was the sacred spring located in the center of the village. This spring was not only a source of water, but also considered a divine gift from the gods, providing the villagers with their physical needs and spiritual protection.

The people of Tamblingan were very religious and lived in harmony with nature. They regularly performed rituals and offerings to the gods, as an expression of gratitude for the blessings they received. This sacred spring became the center of these rituals, and the villagers believed that as long as they remained respectful and humble, the gods would continue to protect them and their village.

However, as fate would have it, a terrible disaster struck this peaceful village. Without warning, a mysterious and deadly plague began to spread among the villagers. The disease came quickly and mercilessly, causing high fevers, weakness, and ultimately, death.

The village healers, who had previously been able to cure common ailments with traditional remedies, were powerless against this new disease. Panic and despair spread as more and more villagers fell ill.

In their desperation, the village elders held a meeting to decide what could be done to save their people. They realized that the situation was beyond their control, and they decided to seek help from a powerful sage living at the peak of Mount Lesung. This sage was known throughout the region for his profound wisdom and ability to communicate with the gods. The villagers firmly believed that he would have a solution to their dire situation.

A group of elders and strong villagers embarked on a difficult journey to find the sage. The trek up the mountain was full of challenges. They had to pass through dense forests, cross treacherous ravines, and face various natural obstacles, all while burdened by the sadness and fear haunting their hearts. Despite facing numerous hardships, they persevered, driven by the hope that the sage could save their village.

After several days of arduous travel, the group finally arrived at the sage's dwelling at the summit of Mount Lesung. The sage, a man with a calm and peaceful demeanor, welcomed them warmly.

He listened attentively as the elders explained the situation in Tamblingan, describing the horrors of the plague that had devastated their village. The sage remained silent for a moment, reflecting on the seriousness of the situation. Then, he rose and walked toward a small sacred spring near his dwelling.

The sage drew water from that spring and filled a beautiful large pitcher. He handed the pitcher to the village elders and said, "This water is blessed by the gods and possesses healing powers. Take it back to your village and give it to those who are sick. However, remember, this blessing comes with responsibility. You must remain humble and grateful. Do not let arrogance or ingratitude creep into your hearts, for the gods will not tolerate such attitudes."

Grateful for the sage's kindness, the elders thanked him and began the journey back to Tamblingan, carefully carrying the pitcher filled with sacred water. Upon returning to the village, they immediately distributed the water to the sick.

As the villagers drank the blessed water, a miracle occurred—those on the verge of death began to recover, their strength returned, and the symptoms of the plague vanished. Within days, the village was free from the plague, and life gradually returned to normal.

The villagers were immensely grateful and celebrated their miraculous recovery. The sacred spring in the village, now seen as the source of their salvation, became even more revered. Thanksgiving rituals were held, and the villagers continued to live in peace and harmony, grateful for the divine intervention that had saved them.

However, as time passed and the memory of the plague began to fade, so too did the humility and gratitude of the villagers. Some of them began to believe that they were invincible because of the sacred water. They started to neglect the rituals, using the water from the sacred spring casually and without the respect it deserved. The sage's warnings were gradually forgotten, and arrogance began to seep into the hearts of some villagers.

The sage, who observed this change from afar, knew that it was time to remind the villagers of the consequences of their actions. He prayed to the gods, asking them to teach the villagers of Tamblingan about humility. Soon after, dark clouds gathered over the village, and heavy rain began to fall. The rain poured relentlessly for days, causing the rivers to overflow and the sacred spring to swell beyond its banks.

The flood rose rapidly, submerging homes, fields, and eventually, the entire village. The villagers who remained humble and faithful fled to higher ground, but many were swept away by the flood. When the rain finally stopped, Tamblingan had vanished beneath a newly formed lake. The village was gone, but in its place stood a beautiful and serene lake, which was later named Lake Tamblingan to commemorate the lost village.

To this day, Lake Tamblingan is regarded as a sacred place by the people of Bali. The lake stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of humility, respect for nature, and gratitude for the blessings of the gods. Local people still perform rituals and ceremonies at this lake to honor the gods and ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.
