Teluk Terima Temple Buleleng: The Inseparable Love Story of Jayaprana and Layonsari

Teluk Terima Temple, also known as Jayaprana Temple, is located in the West Bali National Park, in Gerokgak District, Buleleng Regency. This temple stands as a silent witness to the legendary love story of Nyoman Jayaprana and Ni Nyoman Layonsari, a story renowned for its romance and tragedy. According to legend, Jayaprana and Layonsari were a couple bound by a deep connection, ultimately united in death as a symbol of eternal true love. This story enhances the sacred atmosphere of Teluk Terima Temple, making it a revered holy site among the Balinese people.

To reach the temple, the journey from Denpasar takes about 4 to 5 hours by road. Though the route is long, it offers beautiful, iconic Balinese scenery. Upon arriving at the area of Teluk Terima Temple, visitors must continue on foot, climbing stairs for approximately one kilometer to reach the main temple. Although tiring, the journey to the temple teaches patience and resilience, mirroring the life story of Jayaprana and Layonsari.

At this temple, there is also a penglukatan (purification ritual) that uses water from a well. Besides the fact that the well never dries up, the water is believed to have a unique taste, even though it comes from a single source. Meanwhile, the place where Jayaprana and Layonsari are enshrined is currently known as Batara Sakti Wawu Rawuh and Dewa Ayu Sekar Sari, located at the peak or main area of Teluk Terima Temple. However, the main part of this temple is not the tomb of the couple.

Teluk Terima Temple is also an important location for holding various traditional and religious ceremonies. Every year, major ceremonies are conducted by the local community, such as worship ceremonies for Batara Sakti Wawu Rawuh and Dewa Ayu Sekar Sari, who are believed to embody the spirits of Jayaprana and Layonsari. During these ceremonies, people make special offerings and pay homage as a sign of respect to ancestors and deities believed to protect this temple. These ceremonies attract many Hindu worshippers and tourists interested in experiencing the unique culture of Bali.

Many Balinese and Javanese people visit this temple with hopes that their wishes will be fulfilled. There is also a story associated with this temple, advising that couples should avoid praying together here, as it is believed that doing so could lead to separation. However, some worshippers come seeking blessings to find a soulmate or to have children, which many have found to be granted.
