According to the Jero Mangku Pura Panti Taman Beji, who is a member of the family that owns the land where Bukit Buwung Waterfall is located, the name comes from the beliefs of the local community. It is said that Kebo Iwa intended to create a hill in the area. However, because morning arrived before the work was completed, the hill was never formed. The word “Buwung” in the Balinese language means “not completed”. Thus, the name “Bukit Buwung” refers to a hill that was never successfully formed.

In addition to the story behind its name, the waterfall also has its own background in terms of its management. The land where Bukit Buwung Waterfall is located is owned by the family of Mr. Sanjaya, a resident of Petiga Village. However, because the waterfall is geographically located within Tua Village, its management also involves the village of Tua. Therefore, part of the income generated from the waterfall is also allocated to Tua Village.

Bukit Buwung Waterfall was opened to the public in March 2026. After it was opened, the local community began arranging the area and improving access to the waterfall to make it more comfortable for visitors. Since then, the area, which was previously not widely known, has begun to be developed as a potential tourist destination that can be enjoyed while also being managed collectively by the surrounding community.

Bukit Buwung Waterfall can be reached in approximately one hour from Denpasar. Visitors are advised to use two-wheeled vehicles because there is currently no adequate parking facility for cars. From the parking area, visitors need to walk for approximately ten minutes to reach the waterfall. The beauty of the unspoiled natural surroundings can already be felt as visitors follow the path toward the waterfall.
