Beyond the beautiful nature of Payangan, Gianyar, lies a spiritual heartbeat that has pulsed for centuries. One of the most mystical manifestations of local devotion is the Ngebek tradition held at Pura Agung Payangan. This tradition is not merely a ritual of marching sacred symbols, but an event where dozens of divine powers gather to renew their spiritual energy.

On the night of Penampahan Galungan, the Masupati Ida Bathara procession is performed first. This Masupati ceremony is a crucial stage to awaken and re-consecrate the tapakan or sacred symbols of Ida Sesuhunan. Through deep prayer and ritual, holy power is invoked to descend and reside once more within the forms of the Barong and Rangda.

As the night of the Galungan holy day arrives, the pinnacle of the Ngebek tradition is performed. Philosophically, the word "Ngebek" or "Nagingin" carries the meaning of filling. In this tradition, Pura Agung Payangan serves as a source of energy or a center for the replenishment of taksu. This is the place where the tapakan Barong are "refilled" so they possess potent magical strength and protective grace. The community believes that without this procession, the spiritual balance of the region would remain incomplete.

The uniqueness of the Ngebek tradition lies in its pull that transcends village boundaries. There are many tapakan of Ida Betara Sesuhunan from various regions who come to "offer their devotion" to Pura Agung Payangan. Starting from the regions of Bongkasa in Badung, Kedewatan, to various temples around Payangan, all converge as one. The presence of so many sacred symbols reaffirms Pura Agung Payangan’s standing as an ancient central temple, with a history stretching back to the holy journey of Ida Resi Markandeya.

The mystical atmosphere deepens as the clock strikes midnight. After passing through a series of pujawali prayers, dozens of these tapakan will perform the meider procession or circumambulate the sacred area. Under the flickering glow of torches and the rhythmic pulse of the gamelan, the Barong and Rangda move as if dancing in another dimension. This ritual creates a harmony that unites humanity, nature, and the divine in a single breath.

Ultimately, the Ngebek tradition is a portrait of how the people of Payangan preserve their ancestral heritage with sincere devotion. Though times continue to change, the night of Galungan in Payangan will always stand as a silent witness to the return of the holy powers that fill the souls of the community, ensuring that the taksu of Bali remains alive and guarded in the land of the gods.
