Selonding, the Sacred Gamelan that Still Preserves in Bali

The Selonding gamelan is one of the oldest sacred gamelan instruments in Bali, possessing profound spiritual, historical, and cultural significance. It is used exclusively in traditional and religious ceremonies of the Bali Aga people and is not played for entertainment. Made of iron bars arranged on wooden pelawah (a musical instrument) with a pelog tuning system, the Selonding produces a simple, firm, and sacred sound. Its existence is believed to be a means of connecting humans, ancestors, and God. Therefore, it is treated as a sacred village heirloom, guarded, and passed down from generation to generation as a manifestation of local wisdom and Balinese cultural identity.

The island of Bali is widely recognized as one of Indonesia’s cultural centers, renowned for its rich diversity of traditional arts. One cultural heritage that holds high historical and spiritual value is the Selonding gamelan. Unlike most Balinese gamelan ensembles that are commonly used for entertainment or performances, Selonding is a sacred gamelan whose existence is carefully preserved and deeply respected by its supporting communities. To this day, the Selonding gamelan remains well preserved and continues to function as an important part of Balinese customary and religious life.

Selonding gamelan is believed to be one of the oldest types of gamelan in Bali. Its existence has been known since the Bali Kuna period, long before the influence of Majapahit culture reached the island. The community believes that Selonding is an ancestral heritage passed down from generation to generation and holds a special position within the belief system of the Bali Aga people, the indigenous Balinese communities who strongly maintain ancestral traditions. One village well known as a center for the preservation of Selonding is Tenganan Pegringsingan Village in Karangasem Regency. In this village, Selonding is treated as a sacred village heirloom and is only brought out and played at certain times in accordance with customary rules.

Physically, the Selonding gamelan has distinctive characteristics that differentiate it from other Balinese gamelan ensembles. Its instruments are made of iron bars arranged on wooden frames. The use of iron gives Selonding a unique sound quality firm, simple, and meditative in nature. The number of instruments in a Selonding ensemble is relatively limited compared to modern gamelan such as gong kebyar. The tuning system generally uses the pelog scale with specific note arrangements that have been passed down through generations and have undergone very little change. The simplicity of Selonding’s form and musical structure further reinforces the sacred impression attached to this gamelan.

In community life, Selonding primarily functions as an accompaniment to customary and religious ceremonies. This gamelan may not be played arbitrarily and is not used for entertainment purposes. Before it is played, purification rituals are usually performed as a sign of respect for its sacredness. The sound of Selonding is believed to possess spiritual power capable of creating balance between the sekala world, or the physical realm, and the niskala world, or the spiritual realm. Therefore, the presence of Selonding in a ceremony is considered very important, as it serves as a medium connecting humans with God and ancestral spirits.

The continued existence of the Selonding gamelan is inseparable from the strong role of traditional communities who consistently protect and preserve it. The transmission of knowledge is carried out directly through practice, where younger generations are taught how to play the instruments, understand customary rules, and develop respect for the sacred values contained within them. In addition to families and village communities, the preservation of Selonding is also supported by art education institutions, researchers, and local governments through documentation and cultural promotion to the wider public.

Amid the currents of globalization and technological advancement, the Selonding gamelan has managed to maintain its existence as a symbol of cultural identity. Although various forms of modern music are increasingly popular, Selonding continues to hold a special place in the hearts of its supporting communities. Its sustainability demonstrates that tradition does not necessarily have to be abandoned in order to follow the times, but can coexist with modernity as long as its fundamental values are preserved.

As an intangible cultural heritage, the Selonding gamelan not only has aesthetic value but also embodies deep philosophical, social, and spiritual meanings. The value of togetherness is reflected in the collective process of playing it. The value of simplicity can be seen in its instrument design and musical structure, while its spiritual value is clearly evident in its function as a medium for religious rituals. All of these values make Selonding a form of Balinese local wisdom that deserves to be preserved.

Thus, the Selonding gamelan stands as a symbol of the sacredness and resilience of the Balinese people in safeguarding their ancestral heritage. Its continued existence to this day serves as proof that traditional arts still play an important role in modern life. Preserving the Selonding gamelan means maintaining the continuity of history, culture, and the cultural identity of the Balinese people so that it remains alive and recognized by future generations.
