Lord Indra, king of heaven and god of thunder, was very proud of his power. His arrogance as king of the gods caused his ego to grow greatly, and it had the potential to endanger the world. In the midst of his arrogance, Lord Indra decided to go to Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva, to receive darshan, a sacred blessing that could perfect his spiritual strength. Lord Indra did not go alone. He was accompanied by the other gods and Guru Brihaspati.

However, Lord Shiva, who is Antaryami, meaning one who knows everything from the past, present, and future, had already realized Lord Indra's intentions. He saw Indra's arrogance and decided to teach him an important lesson. With that intention, Lord Shiva took the form of an Aghor sanyasi. Shiva, in the form of Avadhut, lay down in the middle of the path leading to Kailash, blocking the journey of Lord Indra and the other gods.

On the road to Kailash, Avadhut lay down in the middle of the path, blocking the way of Lord Indra and his entourage. Avadhut remained silent and did not move. Indra, filled with arrogance, said to Avadhut, "Do you not recognize me? I am Indra, the king of the gods and ruler of heaven. I am the most powerful. Move from my path and bow to me, for I am your king." "Why should I bow to you? I only worship Lord Shiva, not you." This answer made Lord Indra even angrier. Arrogantly, Indra once again commanded Avadhut to step aside because he wanted to immediately greet Lord Shiva. In his anger, Avadhut stood up and walked away from Lord Indra and said, "If you wish to meet Lord Shiva, you must first repent and cleanse yourself of sin. Only then can you receive darshan from Him."

Lord Indra summoned his Vajra and attacked Avadhut. However, his hand froze in the air, unable to move. Still consumed by his ego, Lord Indra did not recognize who Avadhut truly was. He said, "You will not stop me with this illusion. I am the king of the gods." Lord Shiva transformed and opened his third eye on his forehead, emitting flames directed at Lord Indra. Lord Indra was shocked to realize that the sage was, in fact, Lord Shiva. He immediately ran to save himself, but the fire continued to chase him until he returned to face Lord Shiva. Guru Brihaspati and the other gods soon recognized that Avadhut was Lord Shiva. Realizing his mistake, Lord Indra apologized to Lord Shiva, begging for forgiveness for his arrogance. Lord Shiva then said to Lord Indra, "Abandon your ego and do good for your people." Thus, Lord Shiva succeeded in destroying Lord Indra's ego.
