Usaba Kadulu Gede of the Bugbug Traditional Village
Usaba Kadulu Gede is a major traditional ceremony carried out by the community of Bugbug Traditional Village, Karangasem, Bali. This ceremony is a form of worship involving prayers, ritual offerings (banten), and sacred processions dedicated to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa.
Usaba Kadulu Gede is held once every two years at Pura Gumang and involves all members of the village community (krama desa), temple priests (pemangku), as well as Hindu devotees who come to pray (tangkil). The main purpose of Usaba Kadulu Gede is to seek safety, prosperity, and natural fertility for the community, while maintaining harmony between humans, nature, and Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa in accordance with the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana. The ceremony is carried out with deep solemnity through a series of sacred traditions passed down from generation to generation. The entire Usaba Kadulu Gede ritual takes place over three days, with well-structured and meaningful processions.
On the first day, the ceremony begins with a procession of jempana (sacred palanquins) of Ida Bhatara from five villages Bugbug, Bebandem, Jasri, Ngis, and Datah, heading toward Pura Gumang. Upon arrival at the temple, the jempana are paraded around the temple three times before being ceremonially placed (disthanakan) on the prepared jempana shrines (palinggihan jempana). This is followed by the performance of the sacred Wali Rejang and Papendetan dances, after which all members of the village community (krama desa) take part in a collective prayer.
On the second day, from morning until midday, a procession of the jempana of Ida Bhatara is carried from Pura Gumang to Pura Bale Agung of Bugbug Village. Upon arrival in front of the Pura Bale Agung area, the Mabyasa procession is performed, in which the jempana are ceremonially paraded as a form of reverence to the deities. After the jempana are enthroned (dilinggihkan), the ceremony continues with a communal prayer attended by all villagers.
On the third day, the series of ceremonies concludes with a communal prayer at Pura Bale Agung of Bugbug Village. Afterward, processions of the jempana of Ida Bhatara from the villages of Bebandem, Jasri, Ngis, and Datah return to their respective villages. Meanwhile, the jempana of Ida Bhatara from Bugbug Village does not return, as the ceremony is centered in that village. The people of Bugbug (krama Bugbug) accompany the jempana only to the village boundary as a final gesture of respect.
