Flowing from Subak to Natural Spring: Bukit Jangkrik Natural Water Swim, a Hidden Oasis in the Heart of Gianyar’s Nature
Hidden on the eastern side of Gianyar, Bukit Jangkrik Natural Water Swim emerges as a natural spring that harmoniously blends refreshing waters, scenic beauty, and spiritual value. Originating from a simple subak irrigation dam, this area has now evolved into a culture-based tourist destination, where the balance between humans and nature is consciously preserved.
From Subak Dam to Tourist Destination
The traditional village of Bukit Jangkrik, located in Samplangan Village, Gianyar District, Gianyar Regency, is now known for its tourist attraction, Bukit Jangkrik Natural Water Swim. This place was once an irrigation dam for the Subak Jelaung system in the Bukit Jangkrik area, serving to channel water to local rice fields. Today, the area has been developed into a natural water attraction that continues to preserve both its freshness and its social function.

The Head of the Bukit Jangkrik Traditional Village, I Kadek Juni Arta, explained that this place has long been known by locals as Geduh or Endungan, a site where several natural springs converge. “The water here has been used for daily needs since long ago, including for drinking and irrigating rice fields,” he said.
Today, the management is handled by the Baga Utsaha Padruwen Desa Adat (BUPDA) as part of efforts to develop the village’s potential and empower the local economy.
A Bathing Spot with a Rural Ambience
The rural atmosphere is the main attraction of this place. Visitors are greeted by views of lush green rice fields and clear water flowing gently among the rocks. The entrance fee is only Rp10,000 per person, making it easily accessible for anyone wishing to enjoy the beauty of nature.

The natural pools at Bukit Jangkrik are divided into two sections: an adult pool on the west side and a children’s pool on the east side. The water comes directly from five natural springs, whose cleanliness is well maintained. In addition to swimming, visitors can also fish in the designated area while enjoying the fresh rural air.
The Spiritual Value Behind the Crystal Clear Water
The uniqueness of Bukit Jangkrik Natural Water Swim lies not only in its natural beauty but also in its deep spiritual significance. Within the area, there are two sacred water spouts revered by the local community. The southern spout is used for drinking due to its exceptional clarity, while the northern spout serves religious purposes, such as during Melasti and Mekiyis Ida Bhatara ceremonies.

In addition, there is Pura Ulun Suwi on the northern side, serving as a sacred temple for the Subak Jelaung community, and Pura Dugul on the southern side. These two temples signify that this place is not merely a tourist attraction but also holds an important religious function that is carefully preserved by the local community.
Managed with the Principles of Local Wisdom
According to I Kadek Juni Arta, the management of Bukit Jangkrik Natural Water Swim is guided by three main principles: tourism, environment, and spirituality. “We want this place to continue providing benefits for the community without altering its sanctity or the natural balance that exists,” he explained.

The traditional village continues to make improvements, including expanding the parking area and opening a trekking route to Sidan Village as part of inter-village cooperation. Support from the local government and the enthusiasm of the community serve as strong motivation to continue developing the area in a sustainable manner.
Educational and Eco Friendly Tourism
Currently, visitors to Bukit Jangkrik Natural Water Swim are mostly local residents, but international tourists from Australia, Europe, and Asia have also begun visiting to experience its natural charm. They are drawn to the untouched purity of the water and the peaceful spiritual atmosphere that surrounds the place.

In addition to being a tourist destination, Bukit Jangkrik also serves as an environmental education site for the younger generation. Local children are encouraged to learn about the importance of preserving water sources and maintaining cleanliness to ensure sustainability.
It is hoped that this place will continue to grow as a model of culture-based and locally inspired ecotourism, without losing its identity as a source of life and a place of spiritual purification for the Bukit Jangkrik community.
