The Stone Blocks at Pura Batur Gangsian

On a bright morning, January 27, 2025, I, Brigadier General (Mar) Tony Kuniawan, S.A.P., M.A.P., Head of the Bali Regional State Intelligence Agency, embarked on a spiritual journey that was not only visually stunning but also deeply moving. Our destination was Pura Batur Gangsian, a place shrouded in mystery and extraordinary natural beauty. The journey began in Denpasar, where heavy rain accompanied our steps. However, as we entered Tinggarsari Village, the rain suddenly ceased, as if nature itself welcomed us with open arms, granting us the opportunity to uncover the wonders hidden behind the ancient stone blocks.

Pura Batur Gangsian, located in Banjar Kapas Jawa, Desa Pakraman Tinggarsari, Busungbiu District, Buleleng, is no ordinary temple. As a Pura Kahyangan Jagat, it holds a unique allure. Thousands of massive stones are mysteriously arranged around the temple, believed to date back to the Megalithic era—a historical enigma from prehistoric times.

The Ancient Stone Architecture of Pura Batur Gangsian

The temple's ancient architecture is mesmerizing. The neatly arranged stones, forming pentagonal and hexagonal shapes, create an extraordinary impression. Pura Batur Gangsian is believed to be the dwelling place of Ida Ratu Mas Melanyat, the ruler of these ancient stones. Their presence serves as a major attraction for visitors seeking to experience the mysteries they hold.

As we stepped closer, we couldn't help but marvel at the sight. The large stone blocks were meticulously arranged in vertical and horizontal lines, as if telling a story of nature’s grandeur and balance. Some stones remain partially buried in the ground, adding to the site's mystical and ancient aura. Their resemblance to the Gunung Padang site in Cianjur raises intriguing questions—how were these stones formed, and who arranged them?

The local community believes these stones were naturally formed due to a failed mountain formation process. However, their remarkably orderly arrangement fuels speculation that they might be the handiwork of an ancient civilization—an unsolved mystery to this day.

The philosophy behind this site is profound. Locals regard Pura Batur Gangsian as a powerful source of spiritual energy. The firmly arranged stone blocks symbolize strength and harmony within the universe. This site also serves as a reminder of God's greatness in creating the wonders of nature.

Pura Batur Kendengan

After absorbing the beauty and mystery of Pura Batur Gangsian, our journey continued to Pura Batur Kendengan, which is equally fascinating and rich in history. This experience became an unforgettable journey—not only revealing the natural beauty and architectural uniqueness of the temple but also imparting profound lessons about the philosophy of life.

Visiting Pura Batur Gangsian is like retracing the footsteps of ancient civilizations, uncovering hidden mysteries, and reflecting on God's magnificence in His creation. These stone blocks are a valuable heritage that must be preserved, ensuring that future generations continue to learn and be inspired by the hidden wonders of nature.
