Babad Wisnuwangsa: Tracing the Lineage from Medang Kemulan to Bali
Babad Wisnuwangsa is a chronicle manuscript from the collection of Geria Kawan Sibetan, Sibetan Village, Bebandem, Karangasem. The manuscript is written in Old Javanese using Balinese script and consists of 38 folios. The story begins with a verse in Sanskrit along with its explanation in Old Javanese, then continues with the descent of Bhatara Hyang Dimaharaja Manu to Medang Kemulan in the year Çaka 530 (608 CE) by order of Sri Bhatara Guru. From Manu, the narrative traces the Wisnuwangsa lineage through a number of figures, including Sri Dharmawangsa, Sri Kameswara, Sri Erlangga, Sri Jayabaya, and Sri Jayasaba. The line of descent then continues down to Sirarya Kepakisan, who descended to Bali by order of Patih Gajah Mada and became patih adipati (regent-lord) Sri Kresna Kepakisan in Samprangan. From Sirarya Kepakisan, the lineage branched through Pangeran Asak and Pangeran Nyuhaya. The descendants of Pangeran Asak continued down to the kings of Mengwi, while the line of Pangeran Nyuhaya developed through a number of descendants connected to Karangasem, Sibetan, and Klungkung. This chronicle thus traces the long journey of the Wisnuwangsa lineage from Medang Kemulan through its development into various branches of descent in Bali.
