Babad Durmanggala: Chronicle of Gianyar and Lineage

The Babad Durmanggala is a palm-leaf (lontar) manuscript numbered Va.4419 kept at Gedong Kirtya, Singaraja, originally from the collection of Geria Anyar, Banjar Pilihan, Kaba-kaba, Kediri, Tabanan. This chronicle traces the political dynamics and power struggles in Bali, beginning with the leadership of I Dewa Manggis in Gianyar, a descendant of Dalem Sagening from Gelgel. From one event to the next, the narrative is filled with inter-kingdom intrigues, territorial disputes, and civil wars—ranging from the rebellion of I Dewa Gede Oka and his Sikep troops to strategic alliances and fierce battles that expanded into the regions of Klungkung, Ubud, Mengwi, Badung, Karangasem, and Bangli. This chronicle is not merely a record of noble genealogies and the relocation of local officials (manca), but also an important historical document that records the shifts in power and political crises in Bali until the late 19th century (1895–1897 CE).
