Babad Ki Tambyak: The Tale of the Rock-Born Child of Lake Batur and the Patih of the Bali Aga Kingdom

The Ki Tambyak Chronicle is an ancestral tale recorded in an ancient Balinese lontar manuscript. The story begins with the miraculous birth of a baby on a rock by the shore of Lake Batur, son of the sage Begawan Maya Cakru, who then attained moksha (spiritual liberation) after naming him. The baby was raised by Kabayan Panarajon and the Bali Aga community until he was eventually summoned before Sri Haji Tapohulung. His victory in a duel against Kabayan Batu Sepih earned him the position of Patih (prime minister) during the reign of Sri Haji Bedhamurdi. Yet that glory did not last forever—the kingdom of Bedahulu fell to a Majapahit invasion led by Patih Gajah Mada, forcing Patih Tambyak's descendants to flee across Bali and disguise themselves as descendants of Arya Bandesa, until a new era of Balinese rule began under Sri Kresna Kapakisan. This chronicle is not merely a tale of mystical power, but a portrait of the Bali Aga's upheaval as it entered a new chapter of history under Majapahit's influence.
