Cakra Cultural Arts Studio, located at Jalan Gunung Guntur GG IX No. 10, Banjar Minggir, Padangsambian, West Denpasar, has served as a center for children’s artistic development since 1990. The studio was established to nurture talented children in dance and gamelan, while also shaping their mental strength and confidence to perform in public. Currently, it accommodates 67 gamelan (tabuh) students and 159 Balinese dance students, organized into three structured levels: basic, intermediate, and advanced. This tiered system is applied to both dance and gamelan training, ensuring that every child receives comprehensive guidance tailored to their age and abilities. Supported by trainers who are alumni of ISI Denpasar and UNHI, the learning process is grounded not only in practical experience but also in a strong academic foundation, reinforcing the quality and continuity of arts education at Cakra Cultural Arts Studio.

The success of Cakra Cultural Arts Studio was prominently displayed at the Bali Arts Festival (PKB) 2025, where children from Gong Kebyar Anak Rare Bandrang Cakra, Banjar Minggir, performed as the official Delegates of Denpasar City at the Ardha Candra Open Stage, Taman Budaya Art Center, on June 25, 2025. Appearing before thousands of spectators, they presented three main works: Tabuh Kreasi Pepanggulan Tapa Rare, Tari Merak Angelo, and Tari Dolanan Memedi-Median, each delivering a unique blend of rhythm, movement, and youthful expression that captivated and entertained the audience.

More than mere entertainment, the performance reflected the children’s strong technical mastery of gamelan and dance, achieved through disciplined training and consistent guidance. At the same time, they successfully conveyed the philosophical meanings behind each piece, proving their ability to unite artistic skill, cultural values, and educational messages in a single performance.

I Ketut Sumarna, S.Pd, M.Si, as the head and coordinator of the cultural arts studio, emphasized that thorough preparations carried out since the beginning of the year were the main factor behind the children’s success. According to him, the training process was designed not only to achieve artistic excellence, but also to shape strong character, instilling discipline, courage, and self-confidence in every child from an early stage.

Through intensive and consistent training, the children were guided to truly understand each movement and musical pattern they performed. This included exploring the philosophical meaning of Tabuh Tapa Rare, which reflects the consequences of children’s thoughts and behavior, as well as mastering the expressive quality of Tari Merak Angelo, symbolizing the elegance and beauty of a male peacock proudly displaying its tail feathers. This approach ensured that the performances were not merely technically refined, but also rich in meaning and emotional depth.

As the final performance, Tari Dolanan Memedi-Median conveyed the philosophical message of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which means “the whole world is one family.” Through playful movements inspired by traditional games, the dance emphasized the importance of harmony, togetherness, and balance in the universe, all expressed with the natural joy and creativity of Balinese children.

This closing performance demonstrated that the children of the cultural arts studio were capable of seamlessly integrating entertainment, educational values, and cultural philosophy into a single presentation. Beyond its visual appeal, the dance delivered a meaningful message, highlighting how traditional arts can serve as a medium for character building and cultural understanding among the younger generation.

The training process at Sanggar Cakra extended far beyond the studio walls. The children were actively involved in ngayah activities at temples during traditional ceremonies, an experience that naturally shaped their mental resilience, confidence, and readiness to perform before the public. Through these sacred and communal settings, the children learned that performing art is not only about skill, but also about devotion, responsibility, and respect for tradition.

Supported by a structured and consistent training schedule with dance sessions on Saturday at 3:00 PM and Sunday at 10:00 AM, as well as gamelan practice on Tuesday at 3:00 PM and Sunday at 3:00 PM the children became accustomed to major stages and real performance situations. This routine instilled discipline, courage, and professionalism, ensuring that every appearance reflected both artistic quality and strong character development.

The success of Sanggar Cakra’s children at PKB 2025 reaffirmed the sanggar’s role as the creator of Denpasar’s golden generation of Gong Kebyar Anak. The children are not only technically skilled but also able to express philosophy and noble values through their art, proving that disciplined, creative, and culture-based art education can produce outstanding young talents.

Beyond their stage achievements, Sanggar Cakra plays a vital role in preserving Balinese culture. By nurturing children from an early age, the sanggar keeps gamelan and dance traditions alive, while building a strong cultural identity for Denpasar’s youth. These children grow into cultural ambassadors of Denpasar, bringing pride to the city and inspiring the community about the importance of arts and culture.

With its blend of art education, performance experience, and cultural preservation, Sanggar Cakra Padangsambian remains an iconic hub of children’s arts in Denpasar. Their PKB 2025 performance showcased exceptional technical skill, creativity, and artistic spirit, exemplifying how a cultural institution can cultivate a talented, courageous, and culturally rooted generation, solidifying Denpasar as a center for the development of children’s arts in Bali.
