Ayung River Bali: A Water Adventure Combining Nature, History, and Thrills

Ayung River, the longest river in Bali, stretching approximately 68.5 km, flows through five districts and ends in the Badung Strait. This river is fed by springs originating from the protected forested mountains in the Kintamani, Bangli area. The flow of the Ayung River is formed by various small tributaries that merge along its path, increasing the water flow, making it an important source of irrigation for the local community.

In addition to its function as an irrigation source, Ayung River is widely known as a thrilling rafting destination. Every day, many tourists come to try this exhilarating experience by riding rubber boats through dynamic rapids. In Gianyar Regency, particularly in the Sayan and Kedewatan Ubud areas, Ayung River has become a recreational rafting hub, frequently visited by those eager to feel the adrenaline rush.

The natural beauty of the landscape on both sides of the riverbanks further enhances the charm of the location. The towering cliffs along the river are adorned with lush green vegetation, offering a refreshing, natural atmosphere for visitors. Heading upstream, there is a bat cave that offers a unique experience with a captivating natural panorama. Additionally, several small waterfalls flow along the river, providing more beautiful spots for tourists.

One of the cultural attractions of Ayung River is the Ramayana relief carved along 200 meters of the river’s cliffs. This stone ornament tells the Ramayana story, deeply tied to the traditions and beliefs of the Hindu community in Bali. This sculpture not only represents cultural symbolism but also provides a visual attraction for tourists interested in learning more about local culture.

To reach Ayung River, access can be made from the west side via the Sangeh Monkey Forest, Carangsari village, or Petang, and from the east side through Kedewatan, Ubud. Each of these access routes requires tourists to descend several steps to reach the starting point of the rafting.

The river’s watershed (DAS) covers an area of 109.30 km², while its tributaries have a total length of about 300.84 km². The river's upstream consists of three major tributaries: Tukad Bangkung, Tukad Menggani, and Tukad Siap, which merge in the Payangan area.
